Commissions

The Basics

Commissioning a painting is very easy, very satisfying and usually not much more expensive than buying a painting "off the peg". If you want a painting of a specific subject: a picture of your house; a favourite place; a favourite thing then you need to commission an artist to paint it for you.

The Cost

Most artist's commission prices are the same as those they charge in a gallery. Some may add a setup fee or a percentage to cover the additional expenses that a commissioned work may incur but this is usually a small amount.

Who to Contact

The Artist

Many people prefer to contact the artist direct and it is always a good idea to discuss your idea with the artist, if possible.

Art Galleries

If you have seen the artist's work in a gallery it is worth asking them for help. Most commercial galleries will be happy to contact the artist on your behalf and to act as an agent.

Agents

There are several Artist's Agents who will recommend a suitable artist for your project or a selection of artists for you to choose from. These agencies include the Federation of British Artists, 17 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1A 5BD - Telephone 020 6781 5940. The FBA Commissions Department have many hundreds of artists to select from and will advise and guide you through the selection process.

About 20% of my work is commissioned. I am always interested in proposals for new commissions.
